The Philippine Community Council of NSW is spearheading a disaster appeal for Typhoon Juan (international code name “Megi”) which lashed out last 18 October 2010 leaving a trail of devastation in Northern Luzon.
This PCC-NSW Humanitarian Assistance Appeal is under the Philippine Australia Disaster Emergency Response Program (PADER) which aims to offer immediate assistance to victims of natural disasters.
Hardest hit were the provinces of Isabela and Cagayan. Strong gusty winds and torrential rains also whipped through the provinces of Apayao, Kalinga, Ifugao, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Benguet, Mt. Province, Abra, Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte, and La Union. The cyclone tore down houses, powerlines, and destroyed the trees and crops of the agricultural region.
The Philippine government has declared a state of emergency in the northern region. Typhoon Juan is the strongest typhoon which has hit the Philippines in the last four years causing landslides and flash flooding inflicting considerable damage.
PCC-NSW calls Affiliate organizations, individuals and the entire Filipino community to once again come together for the aid of the victims. Donations are urgently needed to provide basic necessities such as clean water, food, clothing and resources to rebuild their homes.
PCC-NSW President, Elsa Collado appeals to everyone: “Let us join hand in hand in this endeavour for our Filipino brothers and sisters way back home who are victims of this calamity. Together we can make a difference. Any form of assistance for this cause will be greatly appreciated, and will be directly given to the affected victims.”
