Fire in nursing home

    Fire that is believed to have been deliberately lit by suspect Roger Dean broke out early in the morning of November 18 in a nursing home in Hambledon Road. Roger Dean is a nurse who worked at the Quakers Hill nursing home for a short period.

    NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Robert Redfern confirmed that three people have been found dead. As of press time, six other patients have died in various hospitals where they have been brought by ambulance during the fire.

    The nursing home is known to have many elderly Filipino residents among all other nationalities. Some of the staff are also Filipino nurses.

    NSW Ambulance said 50 people with smoke inhalation were taken to nine hospitals, including the Nepean, Blacktown, Mount Druitt and Westmead hospitals, after the fire, which broke out in two rooms.

    Just as any other fire, police treat the nursing home fire as suspicious until proven otherwise.

    One of the known fatalities was Urbana Alipio, who was born in the Philippines on May 25, 1932. She died at Liverpool Hospital two days later after the fire. Funeral service was held at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Blacktown on November 26, 2011.

    Roger Dean, the 35-year-old registered nurse charged over the Quakers Hill nursing home fire appeared in court accused with multiple counts of murder. He did not apply for bail and bail was formally refused.

    Earlier, while firemen were still trying to put out the blaze, Mr. Dean who looked Asian in appearance was telling everyone how he bravely rescued several patients. He has been in police custody since the tragedy.

    Other victims were Lola Bennett, 86, and Ella Wood, 97, who died at Concord Repatriation General Hospital.
