More than 3,400 local students and young people in training are set to get some extra cash from the Gillard Government, with new payments hitting households from this week.
Federal Member for Chifley Ed Husic, said people on Youth Allowance, ABSTUDY or Austudy would soon receive a lump sum payment in their bank accounts, ahead of the introduction of the carbon price on 1 July.
“Local students and young people in training will get up to $190 to help them keep up with living costs now and over the coming months,” Mr Husic said.
“If you’re at university, TAFE, or out learning a trade, it can be tough to keep on top of things.
“This extra support should give our young people a bit of extra breathing space.”
From 1 July, the tax-free threshold will be tripled to $18,200, giving more
than 58,000 workers a tax cut, with most getting at least $300 extra in their pockets every year.
“I know many students here are working a part-time job to help manage the bills, and we want to do what we can to make sure they are keeping more of the money they earn,” Mr Husic said.
“Tripling the tax-free threshold means a lot of our students who are working a few hours between classes will no longer have to pay any tax at all.
“And they will no longer have to worry about filling out a tax return. They will get to keep every cent they earn from work.” Students can find out more by visiting australia.gov.au/householdassistance or calling 132 468.
