Situation in Mindanao in the wake of Typhoon Pablo

According to a report dated 12 December 2012 of the Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Center (NDRRMC), Typhoon Pablo (international name: Bopha), has left a total of 740 dead, 1,947 injured, while 890 are still missing. Thirty-seven (37) cities and thirty (30) provinces were affected.

The total cost of damages was placed at PhP14 billion, broken down into PhP4 billion in damages to infrastructure, PhP9.5 billion in damages to agriculture and PhP50 million in damage to private property.

In a report by the European Commission Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (ECHO), the needs in the affected areas are:

“Food and livelihood – targeted food distribution to most vulnerable whose specific meeds are not met by ongoing relief assistance:emergency livelihood through Cast for work, Cash for training and cash grants linked to sanitation, restoration or mobility access, and water supply interventions.

Water, sanitation and hygiene – water supply to areas with anticipated prolonged damaged water systems, provision of safe water containers, hygiene promotion.

Shelter and non-food items – provision of household kits which includes plastic sheets, cooking utensils, and improvised lighting device.

Health – repair of health centers at the village level, replacement of damaged medicine supplies and basic health equipment; psychosocial support.”
