In a stunning display of insensitive non-Jesuitical stupidity, the Ateneo President was seen cavorting at the Ateneo [campus] with Imelda Marcos, the other half of Martial Law’s Conjugal Dictatorship.
It happened during one of the proudest days of the year for all Ateneans — the 40th anniversary of the Ateneo Scholarship Foundation. The former First Lady was invited as a VIP, desecrating the greatness of the memories of many Ateneans who died under the vileness and evil of the Marcos regime. The event was regarded as an insult to those who were tortured and murdered, and those who were simply not heard from again in one of their ruthless torture and salvage operations.

APPROPRIATE? Former first lady Imelda Marcos graces a celebration of the Ateneo Scholarship Foundation.
MANILA, Philippines – The president of Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) on Sunday, July 6, issued a public apology after photos circulated on social media showing former First Lady Imelda Marcos giving a speech as a guest of honor at a scholarship fund event.
The day before on July 5, the Ateneo Scholarship Foundation (ASF) invited Marcos to deliver a speech to mark the 40th anniversary of the non-profit, non-stock corporation.
The ASF is not an official school arm of ADMU, but is financed by contributions from the university’s alumni.
Netizens and alumni expressed outrage that Mrs Marcos was invited to the event and even posed with Ateneo scholars and alumni officials.
Mrs Marcos’ late husband, former President Ferdinand Marcos, led a dictatorial regime that saw hundreds killed during the imposition of martial law, including noted Ateneo student activist Edgar Jopson.
As first lady, Mrs Marcos exercised wide influence and power during that period, which led one journalist to dub the Marcos’ years as a “conjugal dictatorship.”
Not a wise decision
This is a clueless decision by a not-ready-for-prime-time President of the venerable Ateneo, the beloved university of Jose Rizal, Claro M. Recto, Raul Manglapus, Emmanuel Pelaez and many more democratic luminaries. What a disappointing comedown from Fr. Nebres.
This is simply ridiculous leadership from a clueless President and is simply shameful to those who value the Ateneo’s legacy and reputation. Rizal must be turning in his grave at the Luneta.
