MoneyGram and Habitat for Humanity inaugurate two newly built classrooms in Bohol, Philippines.

November 9, 2015MoneyGram (NASDAQ: MGI), a global provider of innovative money transfer services, today celebrated the completion of two classrooms in Lourdes High School, located in an area devastated by Typhoon Haiyan in Bohol, Philippines. In addition to the classrooms, the MoneyGram Foundation also funded the construction of two typhoon and earthquake-resistant single-room school structures in two different areas of the affected by Typhoon Haiyan in the Province of Capiz. The classrooms and schools were built with Habitat for Humanity to further MoneyGram’s commitment to helping the affected communities recover after 80 percent of the schools in the area were destroyed by the typhoon and the Bohol earthquake in 2013

The classrooms were debuted during an inaugural ceremony on Nov. 9, 2015. The event was attended by the local community, local government and Department of Education officials, and representatives from MoneyGram and Habitat for Humanity Philippines.

“The MoneyGram Foundation is extremely proud of our ongoing collaboration with Habitat for Humanity to achieve our mission to help those rebuilding from the devastation of Typhoon Haiyan.

The classrooms in Bohol that  we celebrate today and the two schools we are building in the Province of Capiz not only provide a place for children to learn, they also act as shelters for the community in the event of future natural disasters,” said Alex Lim, MoneyGram’s regional manager for the Philippines. “MoneyGram is determined and proud to honour our commitment to transform the lives of the communities and customers we serve by offering meaningful access to education through these sound structures that will serve thousands of children for years to come.”

The 1-storey, two-classroom building structure donated by the MoneyGram Foundation is located in Lourdes High School in Cortes Municipality, Bohol. The entire school was constructed to withstand the intense winds and other deadly elements and potential future typhoons and earthquakes.

The MoneyGram Foundation is private, grant-making foundation focused solely on improving the access and quality of education for children around the world.
