$2,000 paid for two songs

Is she really that good, so as to demand $5,000 to sing two songs during the Philippine National Day Ball? I will not give a positive or negative answer but will leave it to those who witnessed her performance.

Organizers of the event must have felt they got a bargain when X-Factor Australia 2014 winner Marliza Punzalan finally agreed to be paid $2,000 for the two songs she rendered at the Grand Pavillion of Rosehill Gardens last June 11. That’s a whopping $1,000 for each 3-minute song.

But that’s not all, according to a member of the board of the Philippine Community Council-NSW, she also demanded a transportation allowance of $250 plus 3 VIP tickets to the PND Ball. Does it really cost that much to travel from her Glendenning residence to Rosehill Gardens in James Ruse Drive? Cost of petrol could not have exceeded $50. Maybe she hired a limousine to which she felt she was entitled.

Comparatively, the average Australian worker sweats it out for one full hour to be paid $20, subject to tax. But in fairness to this 15-year-old singer, her status is different, not as a Whitney Houston or a Lea Salonga (Miss Saigon), but as an accomplished singer.

According to our source, Marliza agreed to a much lower price only because her grandmother’s boss is a member of the board of PCC-NSW.

Apparently, there was some ‘arm-twisting’ involved.

My wife and I first saw Marliza perform on stage not too long ago as a front act performer. It was at Rooty Hill RSL as far as I can remember. She must have been only 13yo or less at that time. Her face was expressionless as she sang and she did not even smile while singing. What we found exceptional was the quality of her voice.

She improved a lot when she passed the audition in X-Factor Australia. She must have had a very good coach. My final word about Marliza is that she won X-Factor because of the tens of thousands of Filipinos who voted for her. She was asked to perform during a Filipino event in celebration of Philippine Independence Day. Maybe, she should have been more generous and given back to the community that brought her to fame.
